For many project managers, transit time—whether it’s a daily commute, business travel, or waiting between connections—can feel like wasted hours. Stuck in traffic, sitting on a train, or waiting in an airport lounge, it’s easy to slip into frustration or mindless scrolling. But with little intention and forethought, this time can become a powerful opportunity for growth, reflection, and well-being.
Don’t just write this off as “lost time”. Let’s consider some ways you can transform your transit time into a space for learning and self-care.
Learning on the Go
- Podcasts and Audiobooks: Choose project management, leadership, or industry-specific content. Rotate in personal interest topics to keep things fresh.
- Microlearning Apps: Many platforms offer short lessons in everything from agile practices to public speaking, perfect for quick bursts of focus.
- Language Learning:If your projects involve international stakeholders, this could be the perfect time to sharpen your language skills.
- YouTube Videos: Even if you’re driving, there’s a ton of great content on YouTube around every topic you might want to learn about. Hook up the audio to your car’s stereo system (if you have that functionality) and just listen.
Prioritizing Your Well-Being
Transit isn’t only for sharpening your skills. This time can also become your personal wellness space. Project managers carry a lot on our minds, and those “in-between” moments are a chance to reset.
Here’s some ideas:
- Mindfulness & Meditation: Apps like Headspace or Calm can guide you through breathing exercises or short meditations. These are perfect for reducing stress before a big meeting or unwinding after a packed day.
- Curated Playlists: Music has the power to shift your mood. Create playlists for focus, relaxation, or motivation, depending on what you need.
- Movement & Stretching: If you walk, bike, or use public transit, turn part of your journey into a low-impact workout. Even a few minutes of mindful movement counts as self-care.
By reframing transit as a wellness opportunity, you reclaim time that would otherwise slip away.
Remember this: transit time doesn’t have to be wasted time. With a little planning, it becomes an advantage for professional learning or personal well-being.
The best part? This approach adds up. A few minutes of learning here, a mindfulness practice there, a reflection on the ride home… it all compounds into significant growth over time.
As project managers, our days are typically dictated by crazy schedules, a ton of meetings, and the challenge of being pulled in a million directions at once. Transit time is one of the few spaces you can intentionally reclaim for yourself. Treat it as a gift and allow yourself to become better prepared and more centered.
You got this, project manager!
